As of January 2020, there remain more than 2500 people unaccounted for, as well as over 73,000 evacuees across the country and more than 48,000 living in temporary housing. (Data sourced from the Reconstruction Agency).
Problems remain even nine years later, including issues surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and reputational damage. While our memory of this kind of damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake is fading, the four affected prefectures continue to steadily forge ahead on the road to recovery.

Photozou has released the “Great East Japan Earthquake Recovery Photo Memorial Collection - Thanks to the world from Japan” as a CSR initiative aimed at preventing the memory of the disaster from being forgotten, countering reputational damage in each prefecture, creating a photo archive and attracting tourism business. This photo memorial site harnesses the powerful medium of photography to capture images of before and after the earthquake, as well as images of today. With renewed thanks in our heart for support received from countries around the world, this photographic memorial site will be bequeathed to future generations.

This photographic memorial site allows residents from the four affected prefectures, along with anyone else, to contribute nostalgic photos of before the earthquake as well as uplifting images of the ongoing recovery process. It has been designed as a fresh, participatory and expandable concept. (SNS functionality and multilingual services planned.)
The following tags can be used when uploading pictures that depict each prefecture before the earthquake as well as pictures of today.
